The Academy Awards-The Mercy College of Detroit Connection
In the history of the University of Detroit Mercy, someone from Mercy College had the opportunity to mingle with the Hollywood stars at the 58th Academy Awards in 1986. “The Courage to Care”, was nominated in the category of Short Subject Documentary. Carol Rittner, RSM with Sondra Myers, is the executive co-producer of the documentary film. While Sr. Carol was at Mercy College, (she was Director of the Learning Resource Center, a separate department from the library) she often came into the library for some of her research. Her dedication to the study of the Holocaust was impressive. I was very excited that someone I knew would be at such an extravagant event. One of the local newspapers interviewed Sr. Carol and asked her what she would be wearing for the event; “I’m going to wear my green suit, for hope,… ”
Whenever I wear my green blazer, I always think her and the film “Courage to Care“. It did not win the Oscar, the award went to another film about another war: ” Witness to War: Dr. Charlie Clements”
